What is this course? Teaching Methodology is a branch of Applied Linguistics. Its primary goal is to improve teaching effectiveness — not to teach you English, but to teach you how to teach it. The book has six units, and the first lecture lists five topics the course will cover.
ما هذه المادة؟ طرائق التدريس فرعٌ من فروع علم اللغة التطبيقي. وهدفها الأساسي هو تحسين فعالية التدريس — فهي لا تُعلّمك الإنكليزية، بل تُعلّمك كيف تُعلّمها. والكتاب يتألف من ست وحدات، وتُعدّد المحاضرة الأولى خمسة موضوعات سيغطّيها المقرر.
The five topics, in order: 1. English as an international language · 2. Common Teaching Methods · 3. How to be a Good Teacher · 4. Types of Learners · 5. Assessment. الموضوعات الخمسة بالترتيب: ١. الإنكليزية كلغة عالمية · ٢. طرائق التدريس الشائعة · ٣. كيف تصبح معلّماً جيداً · ٤. أنواع المتعلمين · ٥. التقييم.
Notice that the course is built as a funnel. It starts with the language in the world, narrows to the methods used to teach it, narrows again to the human beings in the room, and ends with the question of whether any of it worked. Every later lecture assumes the one before it.
لاحظ أن المقرر مبنيٌّ على شكل قُمع. يبدأ باللغة في العالم، ثم يضيق إلى الطرائق المستخدمة في تعليمها، ثم يضيق مجدداً إلى البشر الموجودين في الغرفة، وينتهي بسؤال: هل نجح كل ذلك أم لا؟ وكل محاضرة لاحقة تفترض أنك فهمت ما قبلها.

Lecture 1 — Introduction المحاضرة الأولى: المقدّمة COLD · 1 question in 4 papers

A short orientation lecture. Its point is that speaking English is not enough to make you a teacher: you also need computer skills and communication skills. And not everyone can be a good teacher — being one is about how you behave and what you wear (formal clothes, never pyjamas), not only about what you know.
محاضرة تمهيدية قصيرة. ومغزاها أن إتقان الإنكليزية وحده لا يكفي لتصبح معلّماً: فأنت تحتاج أيضاً إلى مهارات الحاسوب ومهارات التواصل. وليس كل شخص قادراً على أن يكون معلّماً جيداً — فالأمر يتعلق بـكيف تتصرّف وماذا ترتدي (ملابس رسمية، لا ملابس نوم أبداً)، لا بما تعرفه فحسب.
Lingua franca = an international language used for communication. The succession: Arabic → French → English → perhaps Chinese. This is why English is worth studying as a global phenomenon and not merely as a school subject. اللغة المشتركة (Lingua franca) = لغة عالمية تُستخدم للتواصل. والتعاقب التاريخي: العربية ← الفرنسية ← الإنكليزية ← وربما الصينية. ولهذا تستحق الإنكليزية أن تُدرَس كظاهرة عالمية لا كمادة مدرسية فقط.
The lecture also sets out what the course will cover beyond the five topics: the types of syllabus used in English teaching, the role of the teacher and the learner, and how to design tests and the basic principles behind them. Learners differ — fourth-year students are not first-year students.
وتُبيّن المحاضرة أيضاً ما سيغطّيه المقرر إضافةً إلى الموضوعات الخمسة: أنواع المناهج المستخدمة في تعليم الإنكليزية، ودور المعلّم ودور المتعلّم، وكيفية وضع الاختبارات ومبادئها الأساسية. والمتعلمون يختلفون — فطلاب السنة الرابعة ليسوا كطلاب السنة الأولى.

1 · Where English came from من أين جاءت الإنكليزية

In the early Middle Ages English was spoken almost only by the English, in what is now England. It was already an amalgam — a mixture of Latin, French and Germanic strands — so English is not an original language. It then travelled by conquest and trade to the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of Africa and Asia.
Before the British came, Native Americans spoke more than 300 languages, mostly Navajo. Today English is dominant there. And TESOL is not one single profession — the biggest challenge facing teachers now is deciding what kind of English to teach, and how.
قبل مجيء البريطانيين كان سكان أمريكا الأصليون يتحدثون أكثر من ٣٠٠ لغة، أشهرها النافاهو. واليوم صارت الإنكليزية هي المهيمنة هناك. وتعليم الإنكليزية لغير الناطقين بها (TESOL) ليس مهنةً واحدة — وأكبر تحدٍّ يواجه المعلّم اليوم هو أن يقرّر أيّ نوعٍ من الإنكليزية يُعلّم، وكيف.

⚠ The single most examined item in the course. Kachru was an Indian-American linguist. His numbers are informed “guesstimates”, not exact figures, because data gathering is unreliable — and they are now out of date. His own prediction came true: by the year 2000 non-native speakers would outnumber native speakers. More people are learning English in China today than the entire population of the USA. The contrast case is Morocco, where the dominant foreign language is French.

3 · Varieties, and ELF اللهجات، والإنكليزية كلغة تواصل عالمي

SSE (Standard Southern English) is the British variety used in coursebooks and exams; GA (General American) is its US equivalent, used in American media. Both are taught worldwide — but not everyone in either country actually speaks them.
SSE (الإنكليزية الجنوبية القياسية) هي اللهجة البريطانية المستخدمة في الكتب الدراسية والامتحانات؛ وGA (الأمريكية العامة) هي نظيرتها الأمريكية المستخدمة في الإعلام. وكلتاهما تُدرَّسان عالمياً — لكن ليس كل سكان البلدين يتحدثون بهما فعلاً.
The ONLY criterion that decides whether two forms are one language or two is MUTUAL INTELLIGIBILITY. Scots and Irish understand the English of England, so those are varieties of one language. Syrians understand Egyptians, so Arabic is one language. The moment mutual intelligibility is lost, you have two languages. المعيار الوحيد الذي يحدّد إن كان الشكلان لغةً واحدة أم لغتين هو الفهم المتبادل (Mutual Intelligibility). فالاسكتلنديون والإيرلنديون يفهمون إنكليزية إنكلترا، فهذه إذن لهجاتٌ للغةٍ واحدة. والسوريون يفهمون المصريين، فالعربية إذن لغة واحدة. وفي اللحظة التي يُفقد فيها الفهم المتبادل، تصبح لديك لغتان.
ELF (English as a Lingua Franca), also called EIL (English as an International Language), is English used between people from different language backgrounds. Crucially, it is not a variety in the traditional sense. Its speakers are strikingly accommodating — they focus on getting the message across, not on grammar or accent.
ELF (الإنكليزية كلغة تواصل عالمي)، وتُسمّى أيضاً EIL (الإنكليزية كلغة دولية)، هي الإنكليزية المستخدمة بين أشخاص من خلفيات لغوية مختلفة. والمهم أنها ليست لهجة بالمعنى التقليدي. ومتحدّثوها متسامحون ومتعاونون بشكل لافت — فتركيزهم على إيصال الرسالة، لا على القواعد أو اللكنة.
This creates a disconnect: teaching and examining demand native-speaker accuracy, while the majority of speakers simply want to communicate. David Graddol: native-speaker reference books “may be developing as better guides to native-speaker usage, but are less useful as models for learners” — books such as English File and Headway.
وهذا يُحدث فجوة: فالتدريس والامتحان يطالبان بدقّة الناطق الأصلي، بينما غالبية المتحدثين يريدون التواصل فحسب. يقول ديفيد غرادول: إن المراجع الموضوعة للناطقين الأصليين «قد تتطوّر كأدلّة أفضل لاستخدام الناطق الأصلي، لكنها أقل فائدةً كنماذج للمتعلمين» — ككتابَي English File وHeadway.
Barbara Seidlhofer's FOUR features of ELF speech — four deviations from native norms that almost all non-natives make:
1. Omits the third-person singular -s → She look very sad
2. Uses who and which interchangeably → a book who, a person which
3. Uses all-purpose question tags → isn't it? / no?
4. Pluralises uncountable nouns → furnitures, advices سمات كلام ELF الأربع عند باربرا سيدلهوفر — أربعة انحرافات عن معايير الناطقين الأصليين يقع فيها جميع غير الناطقين تقريباً:
١. حذف حرف s من المضارع البسيط مع الغائب المفرد ← She look very sad
٢. استخدام who وwhich بالتبادل ← a book who, a person which
٣. استخدام أسئلة ذيلية صالحة لكل غرض ← ?isn't it / ?no
٤. جمع الأسماء غير المعدودة ← furnitures, advices

مهام الحياة اليومية: تعبئة استمارة رخصة قيادة، وصف الأعراض عند الطبيب. والمنهج يعكس حياتهم خارج الصف.
less culture-specific; no need for a US tax form or an Australian mortgage application.
أقل ارتباطاً بثقافةٍ بعينها؛ لا حاجة لاستمارة ضريبية أمريكية أو طلب قرض عقاري أسترالي.
Why the distinction is weakening. First, immigrants often speak English with other ESL speakers, not with natives. Second, a great deal of English now happens in cyberspace, and for those learners “the internet is an English-speaking country”. Hence the book's conclusion: “maybe everyone is an ESL student!”

Needs analysis — the key question is: “Why do you want to learn English, and how do you want to use it?” Good designers ask the learners themselves, who want some degree of control over their own course. EAP skills are: referencing, essay structuring, note-taking and making presentations. David Wood analysed workplace language chunks and used role-play with trainee nurses; Henry Emery built aviation English by watching cockpits and air-traffic-control towers.

And methods evolve like fashion: each one is a reaction against the one before it.

The Oral-Situational principle, worth memorising: nothing is said before it has been heard; nothing is read or written before it has been spoken.  •  The Direct Method's legacy was a powerful and lasting prejudice against the mother tongue in language lessons.  •  A typical ALM drill: “There's a cup on the table… Spoon.” → “There's a spoon on the table.” مبدأ الطريقة الشفوية الموقفية، ويستحق الحفظ: لا يُقال شيء قبل أن يُسمَع؛ ولا يُقرأ أو يُكتب شيء قبل أن يُنطَق.  •  وإرث الطريقة المباشرة هو تحيّز قوي ودائم ضد اللغة الأم في دروس اللغة.  •  ومثال على تدريب السمعية الشفوية: «هناك فنجان على الطاولة… ملعقة» ← «هناك ملعقة على الطاولة».

3 · CLT — the communicative revolution الثورة التواصلية

The revolution of the 1970s–80s, first proposed in the 1970s, originally called the communicative approach and described as an “extended family” of approaches rather than a single method. It had two strands.
ثورة السبعينيات والثمانينيات، طُرحت أولاً في السبعينيات، وسُمّيت في الأصل المدخل التواصلي، ووُصفت بأنها «عائلة ممتدة» من المداخل لا طريقةً واحدة. وقد قامت على خيطين اثنين.
Strand 1 — WilkinsA shift from how language is formed to what language is used for: notions and functions. Students are taught to invite, apologise, agree, disagree — alongside, not instead of, the past perfect and the second conditional.انتقالٌ من كيف تتكوّن اللغة إلى فيمَ تُستخدم اللغة: أي المفاهيم والوظائف. فيتعلّم الطالب كيف يدعو ويعتذر ويوافق ويعترض — إلى جانب الأزمنة والقواعد، لا بديلاً عنها.
Strand 2If “language is communication”, then involve students in meaning-focused tasks and “language learning will take care of itself”.إذا كانت «اللغة هي التواصل»، فأشرك الطلاب في مهام تركّز على المعنى، و«سيعتني تعلّم اللغة بنفسه».
The seven marks of a genuinely communicative activity: a desire to communicate and a purpose · an information gap · focus on content, not form · a variety of language, not one target structure · the teacher does not intervene · the materials do not dictate the forms used · it replicates real communication. العلامات السبع للنشاط التواصلي الحقيقي: وجود رغبة في التواصل وغرض منه · وفجوة معلوماتية · والتركيز على المضمون لا الشكل · وتنوّع لغوي لا تركيب واحد مستهدف · وألّا يتدخّل المعلّم · وألّا تفرض المواد الصيغ المستخدمة · وأن يحاكي التواصل الحقيقي.
In CLT the teacher is a facilitator, no longer the centre; the class is learner-centred. It emphasises meaning over form, its characteristic skill is speaking, and its standard critique is that it may neglect accuracy in favour of fluency. Popular activities are role-play and simulation, authentic material, and task-based learning.
في المدخل التواصلي يصبح المعلّم مُيسِّراً لا مركزاً؛ والصف متمحور حول المتعلّم. وهو يُغلّب المعنى على الشكل، ومهارته المميزة هي المحادثة، والنقد المعتاد له أنه قد يهمل الدقة لصالح الطلاقة. وأشهر أنشطته لعب الأدوار والمحاكاة، والمواد الأصيلة، والتعلّم القائم على المهام.

⚠ The limits of CLT — and why they matter locally

CLT needs time, may produce chaos, and struggles with mixed abilities. In Syria it collides with final exams and time restrictions. In much of Asia it collides with culture: eye contact can be considered impolite, the teacher is the authority, and tradition prevails.

يحتاج المدخل التواصلي إلى وقت، وقد يُحدث فوضى، ويتعثّر أمام تفاوت المستويات. وفي سوريا يصطدم بالامتحانات النهائية وضيق الوقت. وفي كثير من آسيا يصطدم بالثقافة: فالنظر في العينين قد يُعدّ قلّة أدب، والمعلّم هو السلطة، والتقليد هو السائد.

Lecture 4 — More Methods and Approaches المحاضرة الرابعة: طرائق ومداخل أخرى WARM

1 · Dogme ELT / Teaching Unplugged التدريس بلا تجهيزات

In 1995 the Danish director Lars von Trier and the Dogme 95 film collective pledged to rescue cinema from big budgets and special effects and return it to its core values. Scott Thornbury borrowed the idea for language teaching, and with Luke Meddings codified it as “teaching unplugged” — a challenge to “an over-reliance on materials and technical wizardry”.
The 3 features · السمات الثلاثThe 4 criticisms · الانتقادات الأربعة
1. Conversation-driven — the teacher scaffolds and exploits affordances (chance moments).
2. Purposefully materials-light.
3. Focuses on emergent (spontaneous) language — errors are learning opportunities. ١. مدفوع بالمحادثة — يبني المعلّم السقالات ويستثمر الفرص العارضة.
٢. خفيف المواد عن قصد.
٣. يركّز على اللغة الطارئة العفوية — والأخطاء فرص تعلّم.
1. Favours native-speaker teachers.
2. Impossible in large classes.
3. Syllabuses are necessary and coursebooks are prized.
4. Teaching is more than talking (Angeles Clemente; Philip Chappell: record, transcribe and analyse your own classroom talk). ١. يُحابي المعلّمين الناطقين الأصليين.
٢. مستحيل في الصفوف الكبيرة.
٣. المناهج ضرورية والكتب المقررة ثمينة.
٤. التدريس أكثر من مجرد كلام (أنجيليس كليمنتي؛ وفيليب تشابل: سجّل كلامك في الصف وفرّغه وحلّله).

2 · Task-Based Learning (TBL / TBLT) التعلّم القائم على المهام

Nunan's formula, the most quotable line in the lecture: “CLT addresses the question WHY? TBLT answers the question HOW?” — TBL is the practical realisation of the communicative philosophy. Dave and Jane Willis add that its advocates rejected a reliance on presentation methodology (i.e. on PPP): the basis of development is the learner's own attempt to deploy language for meaning.
StageWhat happensما يحدث
1. Pre-task
ما قبل المهمة
the teacher explores the topic, highlights useful words and clarifies instructions; students may hear a recording of others doing the taskيستكشف المعلّم الموضوع، ويُبرز الكلمات المفيدة، ويوضّح التعليمات؛ وقد يسمع الطلاب تسجيلاً لآخرين يؤدّون المهمة
2. Task cycle
دورة المهمة
pairs or small groups do the task while the teacher monitors from a distance; they then plan and report, orally or in writingيؤدّي الطلاب المهمة في أزواج أو مجموعات صغيرة بينما يراقب المعلّم من بعيد؛ ثم يخطّطون ويقدّمون تقريراً شفهياً أو كتابياً
3. Language focus
التركيز اللغوي
they examine the language the task produced — “offline correction”يفحصون اللغة التي أنتجتها المهمة — «التصحيح المؤجَّل»
The crucial reversal: the language grows out of the task, not the task out of the language. Task repetition is extremely effective. The teacher is a facilitator, not a sage on the stage, and much of the feedback comes from the other students. It needs small classes, and it raises motivation because students work in groups and then present.
والانقلاب الجوهري هنا: اللغة تنبثق من المهمة، لا المهمة من اللغة. وتكرار المهمة فعّال للغاية. والمعلّم مُيسِّر لا «حكيمٌ على المنصة»، وكثير من التغذية الراجعة تأتي من الطلاب الآخرين. وهو يحتاج صفوفاً صغيرة، ويرفع الدافعية لأن الطلاب يعملون في مجموعات ثم يعرضون.

3 · The Lexical Approach المدخل المعجمي

Proposed by Dave Willis (1990) and popularised by Michael Lewis (1993, 1997). Its claim is radical: language does not consist of traditional grammar plus vocabulary, but of multi-word prefabricated chunks — lexical phrases, collocations, idioms, fixed and semi-fixed expressions. Adults carry thousands of them.
طرحه ديف ويليس (١٩٩٠) وشاع على يد مايكل لويس (١٩٩٣ و١٩٩٧). ودعواه جذرية: اللغة ليست قواعد تقليدية زائد مفردات، بل كُتَل جاهزة متعددة الكلمات — عبارات معجمية ومتلازمات لفظية وتعابير اصطلاحية وصيغ ثابتة وشبه ثابتة. ويحمل البالغ منها الآلاف.
Fluency = a large store of these chunks, which are “the foundation for any linguistic novelty or creativity”. So instead of teaching will as a rule, teach archetypical utterances: I'll give you a ring · I'll be in touch · I'll see what I can do. Lewis: exposure to enough suitable input, not formal teaching, is the key — “most vocabulary is acquired, not taught”. Dellar & Walkley: always teach words together with other words. الطلاقة = مخزون كبير من هذه الكُتَل، وهي «أساس أي تجديد أو إبداع لغوي». فبدل تدريس will كقاعدة، درّس عباراتٍ نموذجية: I'll give you a ring · I'll be in touch · I'll see what I can do. ويقول لويس: إن المفتاح هو التعرّض لمدخلات كافية ومناسبة، لا التدريس الرسمي — «معظم المفردات تُكتسَب ولا تُعلَّم». ويقول ديلار ووكلي: علّم الكلمات دائماً مقترنةً بكلمات أخرى.

Which method is best?

The handout's answer: it depends on the type of students you have and the type of teacher you are. Most teachers and institutions are not prescriptive — they examine a range of methods to see what each one offers. Note also that in PPP the teacher is central in the first two stages and steps back in the third; a purely teacher-centred class produces accuracy with no fluency, but focusing only on fluency is equally insufficient.

COLD · 2 questions

1 · The age factor عامل العمر

⚠ A True/False item he has actually set: “People of different ages have the same needs, competences and cognitive skills” → FALSE. They have different needs, competences and cognitive skills. Children acquire through play; adults use abstract thought.
The three bands: young learners and older children 3–12 · teenagers 12–17 · adults 18+.
The belief that young children learn fastest may be a myth. Their one real advantage is pronunciation: Lynne Cameron observes that they reproduce the teacher's accent “with deadly accuracy”, and Carol Read describes a pupil parodying her own voice. Apart from pronunciation, older children (12+) actually do better, given the right circumstances.
The Critical Period Hypothesis was proposed by Penfield & Roberts (1959) and popularised by Lennenberg (1967); the critical period ends around puberty. But older learners may simply be retaining their cultural and linguistic identity, and they have compensatory mechanisms — they can think about what they are doing.
اقترح بنفيلد وروبرتس (١٩٥٩) فرضية الفترة الحرجة، وشاعت على يد لينِنبرغ (١٩٦٧)؛ وتنتهي الفترة الحرجة حول سن البلوغ. لكن المتعلمين الأكبر سناً قد يكونون ببساطة متمسّكين بهويتهم الثقافية واللغوية، ولديهم آليات تعويضية — فهم قادرون على التفكير فيما يفعلون.

2 · Learner styles and multiple intelligences أنماط المتعلمين والذكاءات المتعددة

Purpura's three strategy types: metacognitive (planning, monitoring) · social (collaborating) · affective (adjusting feelings, beliefs and attitudes). These, plus feelings, motivation and perceptual preferences, make up learner styles. Many commentators are sceptical about their value; Rosenberg defends them.
أنواع الاستراتيجيات الثلاثة عند بوربورا: ما وراء معرفية (تخطيط ومراقبة) · واجتماعية (تعاون) · ووجدانية (ضبط المشاعر والمعتقدات والاتجاهات). وهذه، مع المشاعر والدافعية والتفضيلات الحسّية، تشكّل أنماط المتعلّم. وكثير من الباحثين متشكّكون في قيمتها؛ ويدافع عنها روزنبرغ.
NLP's five perceptual preferences: Visual · Auditory · Kinaesthetic (movement) · Olfactory (smell) · Gustatory (taste). Most people have one primary system.

Howard Gardner (Frames of Mind): not one intelligence but seven — musical/rhythmical, verbal/linguistic, visual/spatial, bodily/kinaesthetic, logical/mathematical, intrapersonal and interpersonal. Everyone has all of them; one is more pronounced. End states: logical/mathematical → scientist; visual/spatial → navigator. Gardner later added an eighth: naturalistic; Goleman added a ninth: emotional intelligence — the ability to empathise, control impulse and self-motivate.

Williams & Burden's definition, in four steps: motivation is a “state of cognitive arousal” → which provokes a “decision to act” → which leads to “sustained intellectual and/or physical effort” → so that the person may achieve a “previously set goal”. Jane Arnold adds the affective element: wanting to do something enough to put out the effort. تعريف ويليامز وبِردن في أربع خطوات: الدافعية «حالة استثارة معرفية» ← تُحدث «قراراً بالفعل» ← يقود إلى «جهد فكري و/أو جسدي متواصل» ← كي يبلغ الشخص «هدفاً مُحدَّداً سلفاً». وتضيف جين أرنولد العنصر الوجداني: أن تريد شيئاً بما يكفي لبذل الجهد.

The Ideal L2 self — who the learner would like to be in the language; the gap between the real and the ideal self must be closed, and the image must be plausible, clearly different from the present self, and “fought for”. The Ought-to L2 self — the attributes the learner believes they must have in order to avoid negative outcomes. And the L2 learning experience itself.
Sakui & Cowie (2012) studied Japanese university students and uncovered the dark side: “unmotivation” — either aggressive negativity or a simple lack of interest.
درس ساكوي وكاوي (٢٠١٢) طلاب الجامعات اليابانيين فكشفا الجانب المظلم: «اللادافعية» — إما سلبية عدوانية أو مجرّد انعدام اهتمام.

4 · Levels, the CEFR, and autonomy المستويات والإطار الأوروبي والاستقلالية

Real beginner = knows nothing at all. False beginner = knows something but can't really say anything. The ladder runs beginner → elementary → lower/upper intermediate → advanced, at roughly 90–120 hours per level.

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) was produced by the Council of Europe with ALTE. It has SIX levels, described by “can do” statements rather than linguistic elements, and it applies to any language — not just English.

Learner autonomy means learners take some or all responsibility for their own learning. The ultimate goal of language teaching is that the student no longer needs a teacher. John Field: “True empowerment consists of the freedom to learn outside the teaching context and the ability to continue learning after the instruction has finished.” Autonomy comes with motivation — and do not treat students as empty vessels, because you will not be their teacher forever.

1 · Why do we need teachers at all? لماذا نحتاج المعلّمين أصلاً؟

Gary Marcus (Guitar Zero) gives four reasons: teachers know things the students don't · they motivate · they provide incentive · and they help pinpoint errors and target weaknesses. يعطي غاري ماركوس (في كتابه Guitar Zero) أربعة أسباب: المعلّمون يعرفون ما لا يعرفه الطلاب · ويحفّزون · ويقدّمون الحافز · ويساعدون على تحديد الأخطاء واستهداف نقاط الضعف.
Against that stands Sugata Mitra, who put a computer in a wall in a New Delhi slum and found that children taught themselves. He proposes MIE (Minimally Invasive Education): groups of four to five children in SOLEs (Self-Organised Learning Environments) answering big questions — What is a soul? Can animals think? The teacher's role is not to tell, but to encourage investigation.

The phrase was traced by Popik to 1972. And Kahlil Gibran, in The Prophet, says the wise teacher “leads you to the threshold of your own mind”. تتبّع بوبيك العبارة إلى عام ١٩٧٢. ويقول جبران خليل جبران في النبي إن المعلّم الحكيم «يقودك إلى عتبة عقلك أنت».

3 · The three studies on what makes a good teacher الدراسات الثلاث

Sandee Thompsonquestionnaires, portfolios and observations of students, trainees and experienced teachersgood teachers build rapport, are knowledgeable about their subject, and have very good classroom management. Valued qualities: caring, creative, enthusiastic, patient, well-planned, respectful (NOT physical strength)

4 · Rapport — the single most repeated topic in the course الألفة: أكثر موضوع تكراراً في المقرر

Rapport (Longman) = “friendly agreement and understanding between people”. Good rapport makes respect, humour and safety palpable in a room; students trust the teacher to be even-handed and know they will be listened to with interest.

“A good teacher is someone who knows our names” — an eleven-year-old. Seven ways to learn them: a seating plan · name cards on desks · name badges · notes in the register · studying the register beforehand · a class photo with names written on · asking students to say their name before they speak.

Rapport is vulnerable and fragile when students misbehave — and how you react decides whether it survives. The saying that teachers are “born, not made” makes little sense: most enter the profession by accident and learn through continual professional development. Jim Scrivener: be welcoming, encouraging, and remember positive things. Rose Senior: be “with” the students rather than against them, give them the benefit of the doubt, and be “generous-minded”.

5 · Reflection, and the roles the teacher plays التأمّل والأدوار

Reflection-in-action = thinking on your feet, deciding from what is happening at that very moment. (Contrast reflection-ON-action, which happens afterwards.) Szesztay: we draw on skills, knowledge and intuition at the same time. Gabbrielli: actions are informed by thought — interactive decision-making. And a lesson plan is “a proposal for action”, not a blueprint to be followed slavishly.

6 · The five ways of talking to students خمس طرق لمخاطبة الطلاب

1. Comprehensible inputall the incidental classroom language — greetings, asking about the weekend. Vital for triggering language acquisition. Experienced teachers subconsciously “rough-tune” (simplify) it, so learners understand what they could not yet produce.كل لغة الصف العارضة — التحية، والسؤال عن عطلة الأسبوع. وهي حيوية لـإطلاق اكتساب اللغة. والمعلّمون المخضرمون يُبسّطونها لا شعورياً، فيفهم المتعلّم ما لا يستطيع إنتاجه بعد.
2. Conversingthe struggle and negotiation of meaning provokes genuine learning — the teaching-unplugged claim
3. Modelling languagegive clear models to imitate, through choral then individual repetition (as in PPP). Sound natural and extremely clear at the same time.
4. Reading aloudMark Almond: teaching is a performance art; teachers should rehearse the passage first
5. Giving instructionsfails when teachers give too much, too little, or get the order mixed up

Who do students hear speaking English most? THEIR TEACHER. In many circumstances the teacher is almost the only English voice they ever meet, especially at lower levels. This is why your own pronunciation matters so much. مَن أكثر من يسمعه الطلاب يتحدث الإنكليزية؟ معلّمهم. ففي كثير من الظروف يكون المعلّم الصوت الإنكليزي الوحيد تقريباً الذي يلتقون به، وخاصةً في المستويات الدنيا. ولهذا فإن نطقك أنت بالغ الأهمية.

8 · Careers and burnout المسار المهني والاحتراق

New teachers are excited and enthusiastic. They must learn to handle classroom management, facts about the language, learning resources and the development of a persona. Burnout is the state in which enthusiasm for the job, investment in planning and interest in the students all drain away — emotional exhaustion, not a physical illness. Teachers are not the only people who suffer it, and over a long career many pass through burnout “stages” that may be life-changing or merely temporary.

Why it exists, and its benefitsIts pitfalls
Achievement and proficiency tests give only “one shot”, and the pressure makes some students anxious — so many educators call “sudden death” testing unfair.

• provides evidence of student effort
• makes students more autonomous
• fosters reflection and self-monitoring
• students can edit before submitting
• has an extremely positive wash back effect

• time-consuming for students to compile AND long evaluation hours for teachers  both — the “Both A & C” key
• teachers need training in how to select and grade the items
• above all: when students work away from class it is not always clear that the work is their own — which makes some people, and some students, reluctant to trust it • يستهلك وقت الطلاب في التجميع وأيضاً ساعات تقييم طويلة للمعلّمين  (وهذا هو مفتاح «كلاهما»)
• ويحتاج المعلّمون إلى تدريب على كيفية انتقاء العناصر وتقييمها
• وقبل كل شيء: حين يعمل الطلاب خارج الصف لا يكون واضحاً دائماً أن العمل عملهم — وهذا يجعل بعض الناس، وبعض الطلاب أنفسهم، يتردّدون في الوثوق به

The course moves from the language, to the methods, to the people, to the proof. Lecture 2 tells you what English now is — a lingua franca with three circles of speakers, not the property of England. Lectures 3 and 4 show you how teaching has repeatedly reinvented itself, each method a reaction against the last, until CLT put meaning above form and TBL asked how to do it. Lectures 5 and 6 insist that none of this works unless you know who is in front of you — their age, their style, their motivation. Lecture 7 says that in the end the relationship matters more than the method: rapport, roles, comprehensible input, and the teacher as the only English voice in the room. And Lecture 8 asks the question that closes the circle: did any of it actually work, and can you prove it fairly?

Where to spend your last night: Lecture 7 (28% of all past questions) → Lecture 3 (23%) → Lecture 2 (21%) → Lecture 8 (17%). Those four are 89% of everything he has ever asked. Lectures 1 and 5 produced three questions between them in four papers. أين تقضي ليلتك الأخيرة: المحاضرة السابعة (٢٨٪ من كل الأسئلة السابقة) ← الثالثة (٢٣٪) ← الثانية (٢١٪) ← الثامنة (١٧٪). فهذه الأربع تشكّل ٨٩٪ من كل ما سُئل عنه. أما المحاضرتان الأولى والخامسة فلم تُنتجا سوى ثلاثة أسئلة مجتمعتين في أربع دورات.
